MOUNTAINS - Film Screening and Conversation
Directed by Monica Sorelle (USA, 2023, 95 min.). Hatian Creole, English, and Spanish with English subtitles.
In this vibrant slice-of-life drama, a Haitian demolition worker named Xavier is tasked with dismantling his Miami neighborhood to make way for an onslaught of gentrification. Xavier dreams of buying a bigger home for his cramped family, a dream that remains out of reach even after years of overtime labor. As the inner worlds of Xavier, his wife, and his son are gradually revealed, what began as a quiet film blossoms into a lush and fervid portrait of three souls defiantly tilting at forces that want to keep them in their place.
Director Monica Sorelle and star Atibon Nazaire were both honored at the Independent Spirit Awards for their work on the film, with Sorelle winning the Someone to Watch Award and Naizaire earning a nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Stay tuned after the screening for a discussion with lead actor Atibon Nazaire, activist Daniel Francois of Kickback Boston, and founder and CEO of Sofenomenal Agency Group, Fena Fenelon. Presented in partnership with SIDE Presents.
“A quietly moving proclamation of presence.… The way Sorelle thinks of gentrification rewards our close attention.” —Hollywood Reporter
“A testament to the power of cinema itself.” —Collider
SKETCH SESH (every Tuesday!)
We miss NUDE sooooo much that we had to do something in the interim while we get that brewing for the fall. Meet us at The Superette in the SEAPORT for a quick little doodle session with our dearest friend and partner Lee “Soems” Beard, who will be guiding us in a cool, beginner-friendly drawing session. Lee and some featured friends throughout the series will lead us in drawing things like anatomy, florals, objects, buildings, pets, food—ALL THE THINGS! And the best part is, this is an all-ages event, and even better, it's FREE TO ALL! Supplies will be provided, so no need to purchase your own tools (but bring your own if you feel more comfortable with them—we get it!).
We’ll be joining a few friends to keep the vibes right, so stay in the loop to see what special guests we may have to guide us or bring the music vibes each week!
We’ll be waiting for you, charcoal in hand! See you there.
PLAYING GAMES at the MFA!
Alright, y’all—get your game faces on because SIDE Presents is back at it again, collaborating with the MFA on another outdoor hang! And you know we’re bringing along our friends!! Catch us and the part-time comedian and incredible songstress Miranda Rae and the super-cool Woody Rockwell on September 8th for "Playing Games Pop-up"! We’re turning the Forsyth Lawn at the MFA into your giant playground, and trust us, this is one pop-up you don’t want to miss.
Think life-sized UNO, Connect Four, and Tic-Tac-Toe, plus all the sack racing, kickball, and tug-of-war your heart desires. We’ve got prizes, so come ready to flex those competitive muscles (and maybe show off a little bit).
And because we’re all about treating you right, the first 100 people to show up get free ice cream on us! Yes, you read that correctly—free ice cream. So, get there early, scoop up that goodness, and get your game on.
Bring your squad, your fam, or just your solo self and let’s make this a Sunday Funday to remember. Mark your calendars for September 8th, and come through for the games, stay for the vibes!
See you there!
